Sir Walter Raleigh gave his name to this tobacco grown for the first time in the English colony of the same name whose name was chosen in honor of Queen Elizabeth II: the Virgin Queen. Virginia has a wide range of cultivars, often referring to the cultivation area, but the leaf treatments also differentiate it. In general it is very aromatic and sweetish with light green or yellowish leaves when ready for harvest. Unquestionably it is one of the most used tobaccos in the production of cigarettes and fundamental in many pipe blends.

“flue-cured” tobaccos of the Virginia type means tobaccos which have been dried with hot air under artificial atmospheric conditions by a process of regulating heating and ventilation so that the smoke does not come into contact with the tobacco leaves; the color of dried tobacco normally varies from lemon yellow to very dark orange or red. Other colors and color combinations often result from different degrees of maturity or from cultivation or drying techniques."
